Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the third busiest airport in the
world, with more than 67 million people passing through its terminals in a
single year. The central complex features nine passenger terminals containing
more than 4,350,00 square feet, with one of them—Tom Bradley International
terminal—exceeding 1 million square feet.
Donald E. Kalanick, P.E., leads a team charged with preparing and maintaining
lease drawings for all the facilities at LAX and three other Southern
California airports that make up the Los Angeles World Airports. Every terminal
at LAX has sets of AutoCAD drawings detailing airline tenants, retail space,
and operational facilities. Tenant space at an airport of this size is very
fluid. Retail spaces are remodeled, tenants change, and the use of a given area
of a terminal can change frequently. Until recently, the team kept track of all
these changes by manually editing AutoCAD® drawings. “To add or subdivide a
space, we had to redraw the new space in AutoCAD, subtract the new space from
available for rent, renumber the space, change all the tables, and so on,” says
Kalanick. “These drawings were hard to work with and a large source of
Custom Autodesk Map™ Application Saves Hours
Kalanick turned to Autodesk® Authorized Reseller and developer, Kelar
Corporation, for a new database-driven application that vastly improved
accuracy, efficiency, and workflow at LAX. Built on top of Autodesk Map™, Kelar
created the Leaseline Management Application (LMA) to address the complex
problems airports face in facilities management. “This is the only integrated
space and agreement management system of its kind,” says Ed Maghboul, Project
Manager at Kelar Corporation. “Before LMA, changes made at an airport could
take days to be reflected in the facility drawings. With LMA, simple changes
can be made in 30 minutes, and the information can be shared immediately with
other groups like finance and security.” LMA allows engineers to add
intelligence to the AutoCAD drawings by linking each space to information
maintained on a database such as Microsoft® Access, MSSQL, or Oracle®. Updating
one piece of information automatically updates every other associated table.
“The accuracy of LMA is phenomenal. It is a tremendous time saver,” adds
Kalanick. “It allows us to respond more quickly to changes in the terminal, and
other people can now use the data—for instance, finance can use the data to
assign specific charges, distribute rates, and update operating and maintenance
charges for tenants.” Departments in charge of concessions or terminal property
can attach lease or contract numbers and other data to these drawing databases
if desired for further analysis. Kelar has since expanded this concept to
address the security needs of airports, by using Autodesk Map, Macromedia®
Autodesk MapGuide®, and Oracle®.
